Letter to Ephesians: Biden spared 37 killers from death row, Trump is signaling they’d have been better off executed as Joe’s “Champaign & Oysters on the Potomac” mentality is being replaced with Donald’s “Dose of Reality.”
It's not that No. 47 is advocating a “Cruel & Unusual Punishment” mantra for convicted murderers, but at the same time the recent WSJ coverage suggested, “Under orders from Trump, officials seek to make the life sentences of 37 (reprieved) convicted killers more like a living hell.” How is “hell” going to look like going forward for the nation’s most unmerciful? Reported the paper: “Even America’s harshest federal prison (aka ADX in Florence Colorado), where inmates spend 23 hours a day in solitary confinement, was too good,” at least, according to one official who added, “I’ve got no problem with gruel …” because it’s a “nutritious all in one meal.”
As the WSJ story noted, the families of the 37 murdered victims have met with AG Pam Bondi & other officials and often cheered the new approach to handling heinous convicts who have been spared the ultimate penalty. But the age-old debate over retribution & mercy lingers to this day. As the WSJ said, “While the president’s authority to grant clemency for federal crimes is virtually unfettered, the power to impose vengeance via prison assignments … on commuted “monsters” whom a jury had already decided deserved death … “isn’t clear.” Maybe one’s view depends on whether their lives have been destroyed by the boogey men or their lifelong grief can be comprehended? On the other hand, how “merciful” is it to let the boogey men rot in any jail, even one in Xanadu, until they die of natural causes?
