Letter to Romans: Talk about governmental BS. We now have the spectacle of the feds & Maryland suing DC’s sewage utility for failing to do anything for years about its smelly swamp gas leaking into the Potomac & until it burst into the river like one big toxic poop.
The WSJ headline said all you need to know: “DC Utility Ignored Warnings Before Potomac Sewage Spill, DOJ Lawsuit Alleges – Maryland is also suing over the rupture that spewed 243 million gallons of raw sewage into the waterway.” President Trump called it “a massive Ecological Disaster.” The DOJ’s suit claims the utility, which is overseen by the EPA, “failed to repair the 54-mile pipe, known as the Potomac Interceptor, despite inspections that found corrosion years earlier. By 2018, the utility knew the concrete pipe had corroded ‘to the point that exposed rebar could be seen & that if not corrected could result in a catastrophic failure.” And yet, the utility essentially did NOTHING, except to issue a press release assuring the public it’s “highest priority … from the outset” was ensuring Potomac water was once again made to flow as crisp & clean as a glass of Old Style beer that’s been kraeusened in God’s Country. Right. At least, the main repair job, we’re told, has already been made.
Meanwhile, the utility stands accused to have violated Maryland’s environmental laws and the federal Clean Water Act prohibiting the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters. If found guilty, DC Water will be responsible for the millions of dollars needed to clean up the mess. The DOJ is also seeking injunctive relief forcing the utility to develop an “enhanced operations & maintenance plan for its sewer lines.” But isn’t that like requiring the tissue paper to wipe the inept utility’s rear end after the discharge has already happened?
