Democrats Love Gays, Nuns Not So Much

Letter to Romans: Here we go again. NY Dems threaten fines, even imprisonment, of Catholic nuns running a home for dying cancer patients because they won’t swear allegiance to state’s LGBT laws. And despite Supreme Court twice chastising NY Dems for over-the-top contraception laws.

As the WSJ’s editorial board asked: “What is it with Democrats going after Catholic nuns performing works of mercy? The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne operate a 42-bed nursing facility in New York that gives free palliative care to poor people” with incurable cancer. ‘We cannot cure our patients,’ the founding nun said, “but we can assure the dignity & value of their final days … comfortable & free of pain.’” The good sisters have had to sue New York in federal court after the state repeatedly demanded, upon Crucifixion-like pain, that they promise to defer to their residents’ “choices of pronouns & bathrooms.” One demand warned the nuns must undergo mandatory “cultural competency training that focuses on residents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.”

Having been denied an exemption from NY law, the nuns in their lawsuit agree that “People who struggle with their gender identity deserve compassion, sensitivity and respect … [Yet the state goes so far as to] “prohibit them from assigning patients to rooms by biological sex, prohibits segregating restrooms by biological sex, requires the use of patients’ preferred pronouns even when the patient is not present and requires allowing patients to cross-dress.” That, to the nuns, is one sin too far, morally, legally & logically. As the editors concluded: “That’s today’s political left. The Little Sisters of the Poor, who oppose Obamacare’s contraception mandate, have won twice at the Supreme Court, yet that saga isn’t over. Their next appellate argument is coming soon.”
