Dems Must Play Ball or Face PR Bust

The WSJ editorial board suggested the Democrats’ outspoken Senate leader get a physical pronto because the price he (and other Dems) now demand for supporting the GOP’s proposed annual budget is exorbitant & to succeed in shutting down the gov’t would cause more harm to everyone than even he can claim in his fertile imagination. Note, as the editors do, that the federal deficit, even with the House’s $1.5T in proposed cuts, will keep ballooning to record levels. And, a shutdown “so they can spend more money” is not going to sit well with thinking citizens who care about the nation.

There’s also a political reality in Schumer’s (& Dem colleagues) threatening to take their costly sand pail & go home, especially after the current fiscal year ends on Sept. 30. The Senate Republicans failed to get enough votes to pass a stopgap measure aka CR or continuing resolution that would have sandbagged Schumer & other Democrats by keeping the government open thru Nov 21 no matter how much they huff & puff. Now, bitter negotiations are a certainty. So, if or when the Sept. 30 deadline passes without a deal, the Democrats will own the shutdown, but lose “the political high ground to avoid a government shutdown that accomplishes nothing.”
