DHS Makes Illegals Deal They Can’t Refuse

Letter to Ephesians: US is (finally) reviewing 55 million visa holders to make sure they are properly here while ICE is (finally) taking steps to fine & collect billions from immigrants ignoring deportation orders. Q: What took so long to enforce the law?

Of course, progressives & immigration defense lawyers, are arguing that Uncle Sam suing, then, sic'ing bill collectors on illegal aliens earning minimum wages is really an over the top “scare” tactic to force self-deportation. Yet, as the recent WSJ coverage suggests, at least most of the new aggressive legal tactics have always been on the books & the Biden Administration’s ignoring of them as part of its “open borders” policy has resulted in an unsustainable “wink-wink” system of non-enforcement that’s now turning into a nightmare for thousands, if not potentially millions, of illegals who poured into the country in the last 4 years. As the paper illustrates the dilemma, one lawyer has 10 clients with notices of fines exceeding $1 million each – that's because the law provides for steep daily fines & compound interest

penalties, regardless of income. DHS, we’re told, has recently issued 21,500 fines to “persuade people in the backlogged immigration court system” to self-deport.

So, admittedly, THAT is the whole point of the latest enforcement effort for illegals who continue to flaunt the law that US officials had flaunted under Biden. As one senior DHS official said: “It’s [now] an easy choice: Leave voluntarily & receive [a] $1,000 check or stay & wait till you are fined $1,000 [a] day, arrested & deported without a possibility to return legally.” Such a deal. Long overdue?
