EV Crisis More Than “Cirque de Musk”?

Letter to Ephesians: Stock in Musk’s EV-maker Tesla is declining & its global vehicle sales fell 13.5% in the 2d Q. Musk’s DOGE roll & spat with No. 47 surely didn’t help. BUT, maybe it’s time to also face possibility consumers’ love for EVs was stinking wishful thinking?

As the WSJ coverage noted, Tesla had already been “struggling to reverse months of declining sales." But the most recent “plummeting” of sales, it added, was not limited to Tesla. In fact, the WSJ says “Ford Motor, Hyundai and Kia ... all reported steep drops in EV sales for the second quarter. Ford said its EV sales fell more than 30%. General Motors was the rare winner” as its EV sales doubled. Perhaps most alarming to Tesla fans is that the company has been tweaking its lineup of autos & trucks to make them more affordable yet maintain their snazzy reputation, but Musk in his public pronouncements has been hailing Tesla’s investments in artificial intelligence & robotics. Especially on his mind has been its fully autonomous vehicles. Musk says they will generate gazillions in profits to more than save the company.

Well, Musk’s version of the “Forbidden Planet’s” Robby the Robot may indeed be another financial windfall for Musk. But, if we may get back to the crisis at hand, i.e., consumers’ apparent waning interest in his flagship cars & trucks? Instead of the EV “market” rapidly expanding as it was supposed to, it seems to be pausing if not shrinking. Spin it as well as Mr. DOGE can spin facts & figures, the ongoing and widespread difficulties in selling EVs to the public must invariably suggest its attraction was overrated from the get-go. EVs are still seen as too expensive while data shows they are NOT saving mankind from choking to death on fossil fuels. Those public EV stations promised to be everywhere seem to be nowhere. And too many folks think the kinks in the new technology still haven’t been fully worked out (especially the elastic battery “ranges”) and/or there’s “too much gadgetry” that can go on a fritz. True, you’ll never please everyone. But, the EV industry better find a way soon.
