Golden Rule on Immigration for Leo & Donald

Letter to Romans: Immigration 101 Lesson for Pope Leo & No. 47: “Do not give dogs what is holy & do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot & turn to attack you.” Yet, “whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them…”

Scholars have long debated how Jesus embedded His Golden Rule in the adjacent warning about dealing wisely with “dogs & swines” aka non-believers & even migrants of His time on earth. While Jesus wasn’t talking here specifically about foreigners let alone mass migration problems, the Christ sure did have a way of advising us on timeless, universal issues. And, as Matthew related this talk to Jesus' disciples, it arguably could be taken as His roadmap for today’s Pope Leo & President Trump (as well as the rest of the world). That is, to help sort out their debate over how individuals & countries should treat migrants that are threatening their very culture, solvency & soul.

Pope Leo’s constant yet vague speeches urging the West to “serve those looking for a better life” are well-intended but suggests blindness wrapped around the Golden Rule when he never addresses with equal force the wanna bees' obligation to do the same; for instance, to not violate a country’s immigration laws in the first place or live off the host’s largess without paying for it or even by fraud; then, refusing to respect the host’s language & traditional core beliefs let alone allegiance to its history. President Trump likewise needs to better articulate to those wanting to come to America for a better life that their Biblical as well as common sense obligation is to do it the right way, the open & honest legal way; to truly understand how the USA is the first nation to ever rely on & trust “the people” from all walks of life to govern themselves guided by such beautiful sentiments as Jesus’ Golden Rule; and how, while always humanly imperfect, America & its people are the “Last best hope of mankind.”
