Letter to Ephesians: I remember being a Boomer grammar school kid & having the “Monroe Doctrine” drummed into our heads as a Founding Father’s common-sense recognition there were some bad hombres who would threaten our Republic.
As a lawyer & citizen I still don’t have many qualms about President Trump pledging to use that manifesto to restore American power today. That’s especially given the Open Border policy cynically used by Democrats to groom more sheep to become blind voters and foreign powers cynically using America’s freedom loving Better Angels against it. Does the legal clean bill of health extend to blowing cartel and Communist China sponsored drug runners out of international waters on their way to poisoning America’s people? Yes, provided the traditional rules of engagement on the battlefield are followed. I’m thinking the US Supreme Court will soon agree.
As Fox News recently reported, the so-called “Trump Corollary” to the Dec. 2, 1823 Monroe Doctrine sought to not only reiterate but clarify & update his predecessor in the White House warning European powers against “interfering in the Western Hemisphere thru political influence or colonization.” In Trump’s 33-page blueprint, we’re told the modernized doctrine isn’t limited to Euros but Asians & Africans as well; more innovatively, it seeks to proactively “enlist established friends” in our own backyard to help the US “control migration, stop drug trafficking and strengthen security.” At the same time, the administration is looking to expand its presence by “cultivating and strengthening new relationships [with] the US as the ‘economic and security partner of choice.’” In doing so, Team Trump is plainly warning the use of military force will be used as needed … as it was in President Monroe’s day (as well as often since) … to keep Fair Columbia free and secure.
