Letter to Ephesians: Surprised California’s Gov & Hollywood libs are trying to sucker No. 47 into pushing for a $7.4 BILLION tax credit ... rather than impose tariffs on foreign movie productions to get the moguls to stay home to dream up crappy remakes of Snow White?
Yes, it’s another snow job, suggested the WSJ editorial board. But, believe it or not ala Ripley, that’s the newest massive “incentive” at taxpayer’s expense to make movies in California “floated by Golden State Gov. Gavin Newsom." He already has a state tax credit for TV & film production. "Now, he wants taxpayers in Florida & Iowa to join in subsidizing his Hollywood donors.” Truth is, the editors note, “Mr. Newsom is trying to exploit President Trump’s avowed interest in making movies in the US,” i.e., after floating a 100% tariff on moves made outside the US & even though the “US has a surplus in the film trade.”
So, don’t cry for California’s Hollywood let alone Argentina. As the WSJ points out, movie production costs are surely high for films made in former Mexican territory BUT production costs are high there “in large part to the state government’s policies” that are invariably regressive rather than progressive as always billed. As the editors concluded: “Mr. Newsom could cut taxes & ease regulations for everyone in the state” to corral perpetually inflated costs there, “but he won’t take on progressive interests” who perpetually demand more and more taxpayer handouts to "infinity & beyond.”
