Letter to Romans: Noonan’s recent WSJ op ed was compelling in suggesting Charlie Kirk’s assassination is helping fuel a “New Christian GOP,” i.e., Christianity is almost taking over the Party. But I’d suggest she misses the boat Jesus used to spread His Word in that it’s CHRIST who’s taken over the GOP…
Or, in Christian parlance, it’s the Holy Spirit that’s driving the Republican Party’s embracing of Jesus’ mission as a large part of its own. Don’t mean to nitpick Peggy. The thrust of her column is persuasive in arguing “Religious conservatives were part of the Reagan coalition but are far more central to the party now.” She notes how “The Memorial in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. [had] a height to it, and a gentleness, with a few rhetorical exceptions. More than 90,000 people attended. TV and online viewership is estimated to have reached tens of millions. Halfway through, it struck me the memorial might have been the biggest Christian evangelical event since the first visit to America of Pope John Paul II in October 1979. He was a year into his papacy. 'Be not afraid!' he said, and it took America by storm.”
As Peggy also wondered, has there ever been a more Christian Republican Party rally that repeatedly & religiously focused on Christian love, forgiveness and RESPONSIBITY? “The SOS of the United States gave a personal testimony on what Christ is in history and in his life. The VP did the same. John Foster Dulles and Hubert Humphrey didn’t talk like this!” No, but Jesus’ surviving Apostles did. They were fueled by the Holy Spirit as Jesus promised. Is it too much a stretch to suggest it’s happening now as well? Republican Lincoln would have nodded a resounding “YES!”
