ICE Ambush Judge Sees Clown Act, Declares Mistrial

Letter to Ephesians: Becoming a lawyer usually takes 4 tough years of college & 3 more tortuous years in law school, but that doesn’t mean some passing the ungodly bar exam aren’t stupid. Take a defense atty in the ICE detention center ambush trial who wore a woke T-shirt.

The Fox News coverage seemed dumbfounded at the mistrial that “had to be declared” by US District Judge Mark Pittman after he witnessed during jury selection a defense attorney for one of the 9 alleged Antifa ambushers, a MarQuetta Clayton, wearing a shirt depicting civil rights icons. You might be old enough to recall as I do the 60’s & 70’s civil rights and Viet Nam War protest trials, in which traditional attorney decorum as well as attire was at times “relaxed.” Since then, however, defense attorneys have mostly watched their Ps & Qs before impressionable juries. Said the judge to Clayton, “I don’t know why in the world you would think that’s appropriate.” According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram & Texas Standard, Judge Pittman “learned of the shirt with images of Shirley Chisholm & MLK, Jr., after Clayton had asked questions of the [jury] panel for 22 minutes.” Concluded the judge, “This has to be a first in the history of American jurisprudence, I would think. I’m left with no other choice,” but to declare a mistrial.

Dunno about Clayton’s wearing a lib T during a jury trial being an historical first. Recall too the chaotic “Chicago 7 trial in which co-defense atty William Kuntsler did little to stop clients Abbie “Yippee” Hoffman & Jerry Rubin from wearing provocative shirts with anti-establishment messaging & openly mocking the judge & judicial system. Hoffman especially once wore a judicial robe & American flag shirt at other times. Presiding Judge Julius Hoffman repeatedly held the bards in contempt but refused to declare a mistrial. In fact, the jury rendered a guilty verdict on the most serious charge of crossing state lines to incite a riot, but the liberal 7th Circuit overturned it on grounds Judge Hoffman was, for a number of reasons, too biased against Hoffman the Clown.
