It’s OK to Grieve Over Late Term Abortion Law

Letter to Ephesians: Applause met Mass Gov as she signed a bill allowing abortions up to birth. The Supremes just gave states the power to enact such laws. But aren’t some clappers the same pols & docs who urge transgender surgeries for kids & enabled school lockdowns?

Tho against abortion on moral grounds, the law is the law. So, this commentary won’t be about the legality of post-Roe v Wade’s court rulings & legislation. But after lawyering for decades & seeing too many professional malpractice claims (vs lawyers as well as physicians), I just can’t exaggerate the importance of parents questioning not only the medical science but the decision-maker’s skills when it comes to a late-term abortion. The muddled medical advice we got during the Covid pandemic, including on the vaccine’s impact on pregnancies, sealed a hopefully “healthy” cynicism in me. Now, it seems there’s nothing to be “gleeful” about as depicted in the Fox News photo capturing Gov. Maura Healey’s signing that “sweeping Massachusetts bill” that pushed lawful in state abortions from 24 months to whenever.

As a father of 4 who was in the delivery room each time, it’s impossible not to be in awe of the precious but precarious way God decided to bring us into the world. But when things go south in the worst way, I can only & poorly empathize with the parents who must make the excruciating calls in tandem with the medical professionals who happen to be at their side at the worst possible moment in their lives. It happens that this morning I was reading the Catholics’ Gospel of Matthew 18: 1-5, 10, 12-14. The passage not only suggests how Jesus teaches us about humility in caring for our “little ones” but how we have the kind of God, a Father, who never gives up on us. If that’s true, I’ve got to believe that Heavenly Father will be in that next Massachusetts birthing room grieving along with baby, mom, dad, nurse & physician.
