Jeremiyah Love Ran Past ND Immortality

Letter to Romans: Of course, the best RB in Notre Dame history opted to enter the NFL draft rather than return to school for his senior year. It was the only logical move in today’s money driven game. But in doing so, Love passed up the chance to be immortalized in Fighting Irish lore.

Oh, the 2025 Doak Walker Award winner may still be venerated like a Saint Jerome Heavens if not an Apostle Joe Montana (who, btw, both won the big one). But by jumping ship to the NFL Hell on Earth without that national championship (or, at least, making an inhuman Hail Mary shot at one) … Jeremiyah can never be a Gipper let alone Knute Rockne … or Rudy. Never mind that Head Coach Marcus Freeman had joked after his 10-2 and ninth ranked team had been snubbed by the CFP Committee that “My number one job is to convince Jeremiyah to return” for one more year and help the Irish win the National Championship. Or, that the school’s filthy rich slush fund wouldn’t have paid him handsomely for a 2 Jeremiyah 1:10 Act. The pressure on Love to turn pro was like running through the Miami and Texas A & M defense simultaneously.

Yet we can imagine what might have been, can’t we? Like more 98-yard TDs from scrimmage, leaps in a single bound over linebackers grasping at air & whirling dervish moves that left corner backs dizzy. And odds-makers’ odds are Jeremiyah would NOT have been injured before making even more tons of money with the aging KC Chiefs in 2027. He (as well as we) can also now kiss goodbye best-selling books & movie box office smash hits that would have been made, based on such an improbable reprise. Now, us Fighting Irish fans will have to stay happy with that movie about a walk-on from Joliet Catholic High School who defied all odds and sneered at the know-it-alls. Let’s just hope that after a few years in the NFL, Love doesn’t end up like Heavens selling more beer in Chicago for Budweiser than Harry Caray.
