Letter to Ephesians: Talk about putting an old horse’s head on an old ass. At the core of today’s radicalized Dems constantly proclaiming how righteous they are while talking woke nonsense, is the red herring “Higher Law” first argued in 1850. Can that pig fly now?
As Doris Kearns Hersey notes in her Pulitzer price-winning “Lincoln & His Team of Rivals,” that then-unprecedented theory was created out of whole cloth by the then-Senator from New York, William Henry Seward. He made a famous speech trying to justify Congress’s enactment of the Compromise of 1850 that let slavery keep kicking until the Civil War. As it happens, Seward’s theory (he’d become President Lincoln’s Secretary of State after the House Divided), was rejected by then Rep Abe, who reaffirmed the principle that the Rule of Law for Americans must remain grounded in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution & its subsequent Bill of Rights.
Fast forward then to the years immediately leading up to the Great Government Shutdown of 2025. As has become their habit, the Democrats are essentially arguing there is a higher law that they somehow monopolize and justifies their holding the government’s budget hostage. Same goes for their insistence upon an open border … DEI no matter how badly they made the canard discriminate against most of the country … a legal system without (aka defunded) police … stacking the U.S. Supreme Court … and so on. As honest Abe would honestly say if still alive today: “We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.”
