Supremes’ Fall Term Promises More Fireworks

Letter to Romans: Supremes kicked off fall term with a bang by hearing arguments over local progressive govts suing oil companies for alleged damages caused by climate change. Cultural wars over govt’s role in regulating guns & religion are also on horizon...

And what about those suits testing Trump’s immigration agenda? The WSJ suggests it’s one reason No. 47 has “renewed his periodic attacks on the Justices’ integrity,” while Democrat leaders insist on packing the conservative Court with progressives after they supposedly control Congress after the mid-terms. Any wonder the Highest Court’s popularity with America is now “under water”? Alas, if similar polls accurately measure the approval ratings for Trump & Congress, the Supremes have more in common with those critics than they’d admit. And yet, despite a full docket loaded with controversy, don’t be surprised if the 9 Justices aren’t suddenly “called on to referee further election-related disputes” as November nears.

Here's more on WSJ’s short-list of cases to watch:

-- One case tests whether states & localities can ban AR-15s & semiautomatic guns

-- Another asks whether Colorado can withhold public money from religious preschools that don’t access children from LGBTQ households

-- A third case is about parents’ right to challenge state law enabling transgender children access to gender-affirming care

-- Can Trump Administration detain illegal aliens without bond while in deportation proceedings?

-- And are “third-country deportations” constitutional?
