Trump Brays, Indiana Senate Listens to Voters

Letter to Romans: As Trump does victory lap for primary wins in Indiana that ousted GOP reps who voted against a new gerrymandered voting map, Dems mock him for ignoring state still has a 7-2 rep split between the 2 parties. What Indiana really showed was Democracy can still work.

Not that the gerrymandering war isn’t real … or over … after the US Supreme Court finally, mercifully ended the practice of gerrymandering a state’s congressional voting districts based on race & under the misguided guise of the Voting Rights Act. As the WSJ noted, “News reports say $13.5 million was poured into these races, big money for state legislative campaigns. The MAGA machine went all-in … And for what? …  The districts won’t change this year in any case.” But put aside the obvious goal of the Indiana redistricting move was to make the state 9-0 aka ALL GOP. What hasn’t been widely revealed, at least, in much of the national press coverage, was that the Indiana Senate had rejected redistricting of any kind, 19-31. As the WSJ editors noted, “more Republicans voted against than in favor” of the gerrymandering ruse that seems like a better fit for blue states like California or Virginia.

As Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray later said, “I was contacted by many, many, many constituents. I would say 10 were against it to everyone that was for it.” Mr. Trump, who got 59% of the Indiana vote in 2024, subsequently promised “We’re after you Bray like no one has ever come after you before.” Yikes. Mr. Bray should think of what happened to Iran in Epic Fury. On the other hand, there’s something refreshing if not inspiring to know some American politicians still vote their conscience, constituents’ preferences & common sense as well as party loyalty.
