Letter to Ephesians: Social & MSM are awash with demands Musk’s DOGE cuts be included in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” BUT Senate rules don’t permit such discretionary spending cuts in the “reconciliation” short cut bill? So, a DOGE appropriations bill or rules change is needed. PRONTO.
Not that WH Dty Chief of Staff Stephen Miller is wrong in arguing in a recent post pointing to the above Senate rules let alone political reality as the key reason for Congressional inaction & handwringing. But, as the frustrated have retorted, such rationalizations are too typical of Swamp lingo for “cover your a**". Since the GOP holds majorities, albeit slim ones in both House & Senate, make the needed rules change or deliver a separate “recissions package” that can be voted on separately. Since history says it’s highly unlikely any rules changes would get enough votes, the two-step approach is probably the unstated White House game plan. As it happens, rumors are swirling about DC that such a DOGE bill is in the works and about to be filed. Most folks will only believe it when they see it.
Still, while Mr. Miller is plainly wrong in suggeting the current Big Beautiful Bill cuts the national debt, it does keep it from mushrooming even further. The WH Advisor IS right in reminding the Trump-backed reconciliation bill arguably includes the single strongest welfare reform, tax cut, energy exploration & border protection “in American history.” As such & as the WSJ has opined, at least, with a few more tweaks, the monster bill has a realistic chance of passing both Houses. As Lincoln might have said, “It may be a lot of hay for a horse to swallow at one time; but let the beast eat in peace & get the [DOGE] dessert ready.”
