Will Religious Bias Ever End?

Letter to Romans: More things change more they stay the same. Take Religious bias. Jews have been persecuted since whenever & have learned to dish out a cup of wrath or two. Catholics banned Protestants & Protestants banned Catholics. Muslims ban everyone else.

It needs to stop, of course. But how? On my recent trip to four European countries, I was reminded of the endless wars there that been often justified, at least in part, on religious grounds … starting with the Ottoman invasion of Europe and the Crusades in response. But, then, the use of religion to bathe consciences got more complicated with the Reformation and Emperor Charles V’s Edict of Worms countering it; European Protestant sects scurried away from ill-treatment by other Protestants as well as Catholics to colonize the New World, then, beat up on Catholics who followed them and had no use for the heathen Native Americans, many of whom, in turn, saw nothing wrong in scalping invading Christian settlers. Today, just look around at the “Second Muslim” invasion of Europe and to a lesser extent the USA. And one wonders where THAT is going to end.

Don’t know about Europe. But us Americans, I know, are for good historical reasons uniquely obsessed with religious freedom and free speech, both constitutionally and culturally. And because of that DNA in our blood, we will not tolerate any religion or religious fanatics who work as well as vow to deprive others of those freedoms that we consider to be as essential as the air we breathe. We never forget, after all, that we are a nation of endless diverse peoples that has succeeded only because of our social contract of assimilation that results in a welcoming hand to all so long as all commit to all as one nation indivisible, under (everyone’s) God, with liberty and justice for all.
