Yes, Bunky, Have Faith, There Is a Heaven

Letter to Romans: Ex-ABC Science Editor opines in his book “Seeing is Believing” heaven is not only real but science may yet reveal where it is. I’ll believe it when I see it. Until then, I already have faith in Jesus' promise God will be found if we “have the eyes to see Him.”

Don’t get me wrong. The author of this best seller, Michael Guillen, makes a compelling argument about how Heaven as described in the Bible is more consistent with known science than many people realize or are willing to admit. His credentials, revealed in a recent article on Fox News, are extensive: PhD in physics, math & astronomy from Cornell, as well as one time physics prof at Harvard. Compelling too are his explanations of how the latest science backs up the Bible’s hints as to how Heaven (“where God dwells”) may really be “up there” in outer space; perhaps even beyond the so-called “Cosmic Horizon” where an unseen universe or universes in addition to our own may exist. Hubble’s Law and Einstein’s theory of relativity are cited in explaining why mankind can never “get” there, at least, not until one’s death.

But as with so many scientific theories, what may be missing from or underrated by Guillen’s understanding of the Heavens as a “place” from which God “looks down” upon us is the rabbi Christ’s own teachings. Especially as set forth in the Gospels of John, Luke & Matthew we learn that our omnipresent God is spirit without geographic boundaries and always in our midst until the end of time. There we also find Jesus repeatedly emphasizing how “God does not think like we think.” And that FAITH aka trust in God, not worldly wisdom or science, is the key to joining Him one day in Heaven; yes, even though that Heaven may remain unseen until, by the Grace of God, we attain it.
