America’s “culture of lying”, says WSJ columnist, is led by pols, MSM, Hollywood & academia who make excuses for their own biases & enable liars like convicted Jussie Smollett ruin their self-respect as well as careers. Old school values ala George Washington who (supposedly) never told a lie a needed antidote?
In “Jussie Smollett’s Enablers Weren’t His Friends,” Holman Jenkins argues by way of example the disgraced actor’s “endorsers … like President Biden, Chicago’s prosecutor, sundry celebs & CRT “educators” … were more interested in advancing their OWN agendas than helping him. Instead of advising Smollett to confess quickly, they encouraged his bizarre tale of “white supremacy” aka “Trump supporters” in the middle of the bluest city on earth. “Notice how many enablers were willing to be dragooned, after it was exposed, into trying to protect his lie, not for his benefit, for their own. It took a Cook County judge intervening to stop Chicago’s Democratic Machine from freeing Mr. Smollett on terms that would let him & his lawyers go on shouting that he had been framed by racist Chicago police…”
Holman concluded: “We have a problem with lying in this country.” He noted, e.g., how Mr. Biden is “racking up a record as an especially mendacious president” by also falsely saying Kyle Rittenhouse was a “white supremacist,” his son Hunter’s laptop was “Russian misinformation,” & “no American had been vaccinated until he became president”. Yet, he also bemoaned President Trump’s refusal to admit he lost the 2020 election due to his own inability to keep suburban & independent voters on his side rather than a massive voting fraud conspiracy. Holman doesn’t offer a solution. But, this mania for lying he ID’ed, often justified “because the other side is doing it,” can’t go on forever. Or, can it? If we don’t at least pretend words like “honor”, “virtue” & “logic” are still part of our lexicon?
