Letter to Romans: Family of two boys murdered by a socialite racing stoned thru LA's streets with ex-lover of World Series champ was awarded $176M by a civil jury. BUT can money replace the lives lost, especially after a light sentence was imposed in criminal trial?
As the Fox News coverage reminded, “Rebecca Grossman, the estranged wife of prominent Dr. Peter Grossman, [had been] found guilty of second-degree murder in the deaths of Mark & Jacob Iskander, 11 & 8, after striking them with her vehicle at nearly 80 mph in September 2010. She had prescription drugs & alcohol in her system at the time of the crash resulting from racing her boyfriend, former MLB star pitcher Scott Erickson, after dining at a restaurant. Grossman even fled from the scene leaving behind the deadly mayhem she had caused. The boys had been walking with their younger brother & mom who barely escaped harm when mom grabbed the son & dove out of the way. Still, LA Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino had rejected the prosecution’s request for a 34 yrs to life sentence and instead sentenced Grossman to 15 yrs to life in 2024.
Somehow, the sentencing judge felt a lengthier prison term was “just not warranted here,” explaining Grossman’s lack of a criminal record & philanthropic history. Still, I am lost at how the judge could have thought that this “beautiful” person’s “Wonderful Life” balanced the loss of two really beautiful youngsters’ lives.
