Law & Order vs Excuses & Disorder

Letter to Romans: Reagan did not equivocate in arguing those soft on crime encourage criminals & betray society. Watching today’s well-intentioned law & order shows seemingly often making excuses for the perps is a disturbing sign of our woke cultural times.
To be sure, the Founding Fathers made every effort in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights to protect citizens against government abuse & let officials know their job is to protect & serve as well as ensure justice. As a lawyer & legal journalist I would like to think I spent decades playing a small part in support of these ideals & saw many colleagues earnestly do the same. I also saw too many abusers do their thing, the law notwithstanding. It’s the price we pay for even our unique revolutionary legal system that has never pretended to have been or ever will be perfect.
Yet what Reagan rightly saw as inexcusable is the post-Viet Nam War excuse making both some government officials & citizens have embraced in defeating the Rule of Law … some even claiming it as a badge of honor. Protests, for example, are a fundamental right, but violence in exercising it is pure evil. It’s a betrayal of all the good our Fathers envisioned & what Lincoln viewed as the Better Angels in our Nature.
