Fox reported the NFL’s “Inspire Change” program funds at least 3 groups advocating the abolition or defunding of police & The National Sheriffs Assn’s CEO savaged the low blow: “I hope the NFL got its ROI: More crime, more legitimate criminals released, more community anger & more jerseys sold, eyeballs watching & paid seats filled.”
Is there a concussion protocol available for those reading that scathing commentary? Chief Jonathan Thompson wasn’t finished: “Well done to the NFL, hopefully all the deputies & officers that protect their facilities & audiences that attend their games feel better about the NFL, esp since it is funding organizations that want to completely dissolve our country’s principle of adherence to the rule of law … Perhaps they could spend one night in a cruiser or a jail to see the horrendous effects of runaway crime … Or, they could look into the faces of the victims of crime who are white black, brown, men, women, elderly, kids, poor, rich & every demographic in America.”
The flagged anti-police “criminal justice” groups favored by the NFL coffers include the Vera Institute of Justice, the Oregon Justice Resource Center & the Community Justice Exchange. Said Fox: “All three of those groups support defunding or abolishing the police”, at least, according to their public statements. The NFL doubled down in its support, issuing a broad statement insisting “we stand by” our Inspire Change program: “Our 33 social justice grant partners have been selected based on the critical work that they have done surrounding inspire Change’s four pillars – education, economic advancement, criminal justice reform & police & community relations …” Great. But what about abolishing the police?
