Pope Leo: Jesus Christ Saved Us All

Peggy Noonan may have said it best in “Leo XIV’s Road From Chicago to Rome, “There’s a deep sweetness to how the Catholics choose their leader, inviting the world.” Fact is, that universal invite was & is Jesus Christ’s to ALL believing He is the prophesized Messiah ...
“Who do you say I am,” Jesus once asked Peter. “I say, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” And, for saying that, Jesus responded, I will call you “Peter,” the rock, and it is upon this rock, “that I will build My Church ... And, the gates of hell” won’t ever upend it. Not, that evil won’t keep trying its best to divide us. Which brings me back to the WSJ columnist’s op ed, in which she suggested Pope Leo’s very name recalls to us the “Great Leo” who saved Rome from an invading Attila the Hun: “The new Leo’s choice of his name is already considered a subtle continuation of Francis’ general leadership ... but wonder if it is also more than that: Catholic social teaching is embraced by modern political categories of left, right & center & Leo XIV may be signaling respect for the idea of synthesis – you can feel respect for both people & systems ... they can go hand in hand.”
As it happens, I recall as a one-time lapsed Catholic joining an Evangelical Church in Chicago. It brought me closer to God. But I also came to realize Protestants had many of the same strengths & weaknesses of the Catholic Church I grew up in. So, I gratefully returned to the home in which I was baptized. The one overriding, unifying belief, I concluded, was in having faith Jesus was the Messiah who joined humanity to save it from its sins. No surprise here that His Mother Church remains two millennia since whilst sitting upon this rock & Christ’s invitation to ALL still prevails thru Leo.
