Put America’s Great AI Freakout On Pause?

Letter to Ephesians: Rather than “Pausing AI for Humanity’s Sake,” i.e., before it “kills us all,” might a better approach be to simply stop “talking” to CHAT like IT is a human being & not taking the MACHINE’S man-made advice as if it’s the Gospels truth?

Of course, in suggesting we keep AI in such human perspective, I risk the wrath of CHAT suggested in the WSJ’s op ed titled, “America’s Great AI Freakout Has Begun.” According to the editors, “Simmering worries that the technology could wipe out civilization & launch cyberattacks reached a boil at the office & around the dinner table.” Yet, AI is still far from being masters of the facts let alone the universe. MANY times, I’ve gotten erroneous information from the various AI platforms, challenged them, and (to ITS' credit) gotten mia culpas addressing the wrongs.

That, of course, is not to say AI’s potential for mayhem is not tangible & worrisome. But Peggy Noonan’s opinion that AI be paused for “humanity’s sake” sounds more like a political party’s “kick the can down the road” approach to an obvious problem rather than a solution. Especially as the Communists in China & elsewhere would love such a “pause” while Western Civilization waits for their latest AI products to arrive on its doorstep at extortionist prices. Not that Peggy’s wrong in warning that “When something speeds up & gets out of control, it isn’t alarmist to demand prudence & deliberation.” Yet, ask Websters if not CHAT. “Prudence & deliberation” doesn’t necessarily mean “Pause”. Why not continue to have our "Cake & Eat It Too" while the ingredients are being kicked around in the can?
