Trump Slaughters EAC & Earth Quakes n’ Quacks

Letter to Romans: US Supremes just issued their “Slaughter” rule allowing No. 47 to fire executive agency heads so the firestorm of protests over his booting all US Election Assistance Commission members is arguably “Much Ado About Nothing …”

At least, that was the opinion of the WSJ’s editorial board, which reminded the “panicking” progressives that it is the STATES that were given the constitutional power to run federal elections within their borders, not EAC with its rinky dink $15M grant budget. Indeed, the Supreme Court in Trump v Slaughter made it clear “executive agencies aren’t constitutionally independent so “the partisan rhetoric” in the wake of Trump firing HIS election board “is ahead of reality.” Cited as a for instance was Dem Sen Chuck Schumer accusing Trump of “a brazen attempt to seize control of our elections before a single vote is cast.” To put such gnashing of liberal teeth over a toothless executive agency in Shakespearean terms, however, one might ask, “To Whine or Not to Whine, THAT is the question … and to what end dear Caius Martius Coriolanus?” Concluded the editors: “While some of the EAC’s functions are useful, the November elections would go on even if the agency were hit by an asteroid and vaporized.”

Trump’s EAC killing field left only a small army of 4 bipartisan seat holders behind. As the WSJ explained, “Mr. Trump fired two Democrats, Thomas Hicks & Benjamin Hovland. A Republican, Christy McCormick, was ‘allowed to resign’ … A fourth seat was vacant.” The WSJ’s knife in the EAC’s back? “Basic functions can continue under the EAC’s staff.” As if further laying down the gauntlet to Sen. Schumer, the editors reminded that when Mr. Hovland joined the EAC in 2019, it was “the first time in a decade the commission had a full quorum.” Is something most foul in the DC Swamp, then, or is a fragrant breath of fresh air about to visit Capitol Hill? Me thinks neither.
