Trump Takes Gas Out of Dems’ DHS Shutdown

Letter to Romans: While Democrats “stick to their guns” publicly about their crusade to reform ICE & keep entire DHS & TSA hostage via shutdown, even the die-hards among them “know they need to back down” before they cede high ground & mid-term voters lose their sanity.
At least, that was pretty much the gist of Kimberley Strassel’s WSJ op ed, in which she only half-jokingly noted: “In a bid to reopen the Department of Homeland Security, the White House on Thursday offered to make Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer head of the department. Mr. Schumer flatly rejected the offer, saying he could never trust anyone the Trump team appointed.” Strassel goes on to point out that No. 47 basically GAVE the Senate leader nearly everything he had been demanding to reopen DHS & along with it TSA: Comprehensive use of body cams on ICE agent operations? Check. Limits on ICE operations in sensitive places like hospitals & schools? Check. Mandatory inspector-general audits? Check. ICE agents wearing IDs & shouting out their names? Check. Adherence to laws against the deportation of US citizens? Check. Use judicial warrants instead of administrative warrants for entry into homes? Check. Codify those “reforms”? Check.
And yet, there was House Minority Leader Jeffries indignantly saying it’s nowhere near enough & there has to be a “change in policy, too.” That, even though other WSJ coverage notes how Mr. Trump has already conceded as much by appointing Tom Holman as ICE chieftain that he was officially toning down aka changing the enforcement program to refocus on “criminal illegal aliens” & by appointing Markwayne Mullin as the new DHS chief who echoed all of the above in his recent Congressional testimony and then some. As Strassel concluded, the new WH strategy on immigration … is a new version … “of that immortal ‘Jerry Maguire’ plea: ‘Help me help you.’” But can the Dems stand it?
