A House Divided Can Stand More Tax Relief

Letter to Ephesians: The House tax bill missed reform & growth opportunities, but the Senate has chance to significantly improve Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” without killing its chances in the divided Congress. Think less tax carve outs like SALT & more spending cuts that stop welfare benefits abuse.

There’s no way the nation’s nearly $37 trillion debt is going to be solved let alone seriously reduced this time around as some conservatives have been insisting. And, it’s true the House version does include many policy plusses, e.g., by avoiding a $4.5 trillion tax increase by making the 2017 tax rate reductions permanent. But, ofcourse, the editors are right in arguing President Trump’s tax bill can yet be “better.” At least the deficit bleeding could be staunched a bit more, suggests the WSJ editorial board, by accelerating the kibosh on Green New Deal subsidies & still tighter rules to fight waste, fraud & abuse in the Food Stamp and Medicaid programs.

To be sure, the Democrats who never vote against such additional taxpayer savings will continue to vote in lock step with the Party’s progressive agenda with the fervor of a religious fanatic. Yet, they’ll do so with the House version anyway. So, why not firm up the support on the GOP side and for once do what’s best for the nation’s fiscal health if not survival?
