Letter to Ephesians: What the Catholic Church, no, what mankind needs in today’s angry world is another incredibly credible moral leader like Pope John Paul II. But, do the “leading candidates” come even close to the Polish Pontiff?
Aside from the fact John Paul II had a harrowing experience in WWII fighting the Nazis, faced down communist Russia along with the Solidarity Movement and took a more life-threatening assassin’s bullet than Pres Trump … it’s hard to recall a Catholic more universally admired, listened to & impactful. He was a rock star. A “Why Can’t We All Be Like Him” star. Unfortunately, the WSJ’s recent “look at 10 of the men seen as front-runners in the contest to become the next pope” look more in the vein of another controversial Francis. And, as some have noted, Francis has had 12-yrs to appoint Cardinals like his globalist self that will influence the enclave voting.
Sure, as the WSJ piece points out, “after Francis’ stormy 12-year pontificate,” the “Cardinals are expected to seek a successor who can restore calm after years of ideological polarization in the Catholic Church.” And, it’s suggested, “An ideologically moderate cardinal with the diplomatic finesse to bridge the Church’s divisions, while maintaining Francis’ [Jesuit aka Social Justice] pastoral focus, might have good prospects.” But, then, many of the predicted candidates’ backgrounds belie a heavy emphasis on second or third world “progressives” while a couple of “conservatives” sound either boring or a “dark horse.” Of course, John Paul II seemed to miraculously rise out of the tomb of history to resurrect his Church as well as its impact on the world. To be sure, with God all things are possible.
