Columbus Knew Globalist Xi Better Than Peng Shuai

The bizarre saga behind China’s ‘missing’ Peng Shuai might also be dubbed “The Case of Globalism Biting Globalist Xi Where Sun Don’t Shine.” As the WSJ’s Bill McGurn notes, the tennis star had simply “accused a top Communist of sexual assault [but] Beijing can’t deal with it” as globalism has ironically frustrated President Xi’s usual intimidation tactics in sweeping such embarrassing news under the rug.

You’ll recall how China’s economy has soared in recent years thanks to its remarkable ability to take advantage of a globalizing world economy & the West’s naïve believe it would “play fair” in accordance with its long-established competition rules. Intimidation, retaliation & manipulation of the world market place, for example, against Australia which had once dared question China’s roll in the “origins of Covid”, have been standard tricks of is trade. Yet, when the globalized community fights back rather than succumbs, Xi & the PRC seem to loose their mind.

“This is the flip side to globalization that China is not so keen on,” McGurn noted. Hence, Shuai’s sudden disappearance. But, when the U.S. threatened a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Olympics in Beijing over her whereabouts & perhaps even “suppression of Uyghur minorities” to boot, President Xi suddenly “assures” the world he won’t use force to squash Taiwan … and, Shuai appears in a video showing she’s still alive, then, sends an email to a person who can’t verify it’s from her. BTW: The PRC’s boycott of Australian goods also boomeranged on an ever more thriving country down under. As Chris Columbus might have once said: “Ah, Globalism … we can’t live with ye, but can’t live without ye.”
