Sixty years later we learn Dean Martin didn’t attend JFK’s inauguration out of “loyalty” to fellow Rat Pack member Sammy Davis who wasn’t invited because he was a black man who dared marry a white woman. Bravo for no-show Dean. Raspberry for hypocrite Frank?

Fox revealed the “pretty remarkable” historical factoid while reviewing an upcoming documentary on Dean’s life, in which “family always came first.” Explained the network: “In 1960, Davis said ‘I do’ to May Britt, a white actress, which immediately sparked backlash. In a 1989 book titled ‘Why Me?’, which the singer co-wrote with his friends, Davis claimed that the new president asked him & his Swedish star wife, May Britt, not to participate in the inauguration out of fear that an interracial couple would anger Southerners.”

On Friday, Turner Classic Movies aired “Dean Martin: King of Cool” & exposed a long-ignored DC Swamp ‘n Hollywood hypocrisy. Said the doc’s director, Tom Donahue: “Sammy Davis, Jr. helped to get JFK elected & then JFK & his campaign decided to pay Sammy back by not allowing him to go to the inauguration because he was part of an interracial marriage. It was Dean Martin who stood up for his friend & said, ‘I’m not going to be part of the inauguration if Sammy isn’t going.’” Dean’s now 73-yr-old daughter, Deana, told Fox: “[My father was] just astounded. [Davis] was my uncle Sammy. He came to our house. He was family.” So, Dean did the right thing, he did it “My Way” while the you know who “Chairman of the Board” kissed JFK’s ring …
