Neflix & Chappelle Show Guts Gets Cancel Culture Glory

Did Netflix know it may have created a blueprint for companies to blow off cancel culture assaults in its defense of comedian Dave Chappelle? Holman Jenkins suggests as much in its “Neflix Isn’t Brave and That’s Fine.”

Noted the WSJ columnist: “In sticking up for Dave Chappelle, it’s really defending its own leadership … and, that’s ok.” When the comedian’s new show contained the usual jokes about gays (who again charged he had crossed the “hurtful” line), a flood of pressure befell the network to cancel out the show. Yet, instead of bowing to the pressure, Netflix “showered money on the comedian, boasted of his viewer appeal. Mr. Chappelle in turn has showered praise on the Netflix leaders.” The incensed cancel culture leaders must be wondering “what the hell happened to company execs being worried about us scaring the bejeezus out of the shareholders & board of directors by cancelling out their profits through boycotts?” Said Mr. Jenkins: Chappelle & the two top execs at Netflix “in some sense decided the threesome must hang together to avoid hanging separately.”

Ah, and therein lies the blueprint for at least some future corporate cancel culture victims: “Got Guts? Get Glory.”
