Letter to Romans: Can Iran’s warped mania for the A-bomb be traced not only to the warped “Leader is God” cult presented by North Korea, but also (surprisingly} by American Christianity’s faith in a Messianic God Savior?
At least that was partly the premise of Jonathan Cheng’s lengthy WSJ op ed title “The Surprising Source of North Korea’s Enduring Power.” As the paper’s China bureau chief argued, it’s oversimplistic to blame just the communists in Russia & China for the Hermit Country’s unique isolationism. In fact, Cheng notes, North Korea not only has rejected American influence but efforts of both Russia & China to control its internal as well as external politics over time. No doubt, that independence was fueled immensely by its ability to create the A-bomb & missiles capable of reaching ANY nation’s capital. And yet, suggests Cheng, it was in the 80s & 90s that visitors to North Korea noticed unmistakable similarities between the Bible and North Korea’s development of Chuch’e, aka the cult of individual “self-reliance” and the government mandated belief in a Divine or Great Leader. President Carter and evangelist Billy Graham were, for example, stunned when they made “the trip.” Not that this twisting of religion & logic was easy or quick … or Christian. On the contrary, we’re reminded that over decades the North Korean’s leadership waged war on Christianity, mocking it in relentless propaganda, persecutions, unyielding laws, prosecutions, imprisonments and executions. Still, Cheng marvels, is there any nuclear country mostly left alone by so-called allies & enemies alike?
Fast forward to 2026. Surely the fanatic Islamic Republic’s mullahs were watching North Korea’s “success story” making it “virtually impervious to an external strike.” Go ahead and replace Christianity with Islam and Kim Il Sung with now deceased but supposedly in heaven Ayatollah and you get the picture of Iran’s love affair with The Bomb.
