GOP’s Big Beautiful Tax Bill’s Ugly Side

WSJ gave “One Cheer for the House [aka Trumpian] Tax Bill” because it would make a monstrous Tax Code even more complicated rather than simplified. BUT at the same time, it conceded No. 45’s key & sweeping tax cuts would be made permanent. Exactly. Plan B Tax Revolt can wait.
That is, Plan A for No 47 & the slim GOP House majority was always to keep the Swamp solvent yet somewhat affordable while the open border was closed, the military was rebuilt, an anti-American global trade system was tamed, and multiple wars were ended from a position of strength rather than weakness. Whew! Talk about ambitious. A major Tax Code redo was always seen by Mr. Trump as, at least, a year or two down the road; for example, just before the pivotal mid-term elections were nearing at the end of 2026 so Republican incumbents & hopefuls could campaign on it.
Not that the newspaper’s editorial board isn’t right in being cynical about that future, given the Swamp’s perpetual promise of “real” tax reform, only to kick the can until it falls off a flat earth. Particularly disappointing was the simple popular & eminently simplifying idea that the income tax on Social Security benefits should be made exempt like it was until 1984. Really, did grandma & pa need another “deduction” to deal with instead? Likewise, the new & questionably “fair” tax exemption for tips & overtime pay for workers earning less than $160K is also too loosely worded by limiting it to an “occupation which traditionally & customarily received tips before” 2025; as such, the WSJ suggests, it will beg for an evidentiary free for all, in which the biggest winner will be lawyers, accountants & the H&R Block crowd. Exactly.
