In Good Hands With Doctors, Angels & God

Letter to Romans: Jesus said it takes FAITH for miracles to happen. Christ’s crucifixion & Pope Leo’s lung tumor remind no one’s spared trials. A new book suggests his doctors’ job isn’t to perform miracles but treat our pain while God & His Angels take care of our souls …

Dr. Marc Siegal’s book, “The Angels Among Us,” explores miracles & especially whether faith can at least help his patients heal. He reveals what he’s witnessed firsthand about “the intersection of spirituality, clinical treatment & unexplained medical recoveries.” As Dr. Siegal told Fox News, “You don’t draw the line between an explanation that’s medical or spiritual. They’re combined. And the more doctors remember that the better.” He cites surveys indicating 70% of physicians believe in God & 55% report witnessing medical miracles. Dr. Siegal would “expand the definition of ‘angels’ beyond ethereal beings to include doctors, nurses & ordinary people whose timely interventions have led to unexplained recoveries.” He noted,” I started to identify humans who play the role of angels in our lives. The messengers are either actual angels from God that come down, that can take human form, that are voices where you don’t have a visualization, or they can be humans that God appoints to do angel-like work. “Among the cases featured are US Army Staff Sgt. Spencer Milo, who got a terminal brain tumor diagnosis after suffering severe trauma in Iraq. While getting a 2d opinion, he met a Benedictine monk who encouraged him to rely on his faith. Subsequent imaging revealed the tumor was benign.

Haven’t most of us had a medical-spiritual encounter? I recall decades later being hit by a speeding car as I jaywalked across Chicago’s Dearborn St. on my way to the downtown Federal Courthouse to handle a client’s motion. Knocked unconscious, I awoke in shock & paralyzed to a Fireman’s warming coat & reassuring voice telling me I was in “good hands.” I prayed, thankful to be awake again. Police on the scene reported I “probably” had a broken arm, collar bone & leg. But, when I got to Rush Medical, its doctors found no breaks. “This is impossible,” I heard one say. But a 2d round of head-to-toe x-rays confirmed the good news. The Chicago fireman aka angel was right about being in “Good Hands.”
