All days matter. Yet, some more than others. Consider that Christmas may be the Savior’s birthday but it’s also arguably the real birth of our nation. Recall December 25, 1776 is the day after the night Washington took about 3,000 rag tag Continental soldiers across a wind swept, icy Delaware River & saved the American Revolution by kicking a couple thousand Hessian butts.
If the then-inexperienced Washington was anything, he was a man of unshakeable faith. In his God, his cause, his men & himself. The General’s own butt had been whipped by elite British troops up & down New York. The few troops he had were days from leaving when enlistments expired. And, you think today’s Congress is populated by do-nothing, dimwits? Try dealing with a brainless Adam Schiff on Geo’s Intl Committee…the General knew the Brits & Hessians were warned by gov’t leakers & loyalist spies that a Revolution saving attack would be tried in the Trenton area, which the King’s brain trust had abandoned to the mercenaries.
Yet, there the future First President was on December 20 calling for a council of war. Gambling the enemy would assume the news fake, he urged a Christmas Eve attack. His own brain trust looked at him like he had grown lobster ears. Sorta how Joseph must have looked at Mary when told of Archangel Gabriel’s annunciation of a Messiah’s Immaculate Conception & how Mary likely looked at Joseph when told the near birth Virgin had to accompany him to Bethlehem so her God-child could be born in David’s hometown. It’s all the Faith of Our Fathers & Mothers. It’s why the imperfect U.S.A is still the “Last Best Hope of Earth.” And, thank God it’s so.
